Making Smiles, Keeping Smiles

Smiles on Wings was founded in 2003 by Dr. Usa Bunnag, a Thai dentist practicing in Bethesda, Maryland. When Dr. Bunnag returned to her native country of Thailand after many years, she saw that her fellow Thai people needed her help. Dr. Bunnag immediately put together a group of American volunteers and returned to Thailand armed with all the equipment, supplies and manpower needed to set up a mobile dental clinic.
Ten years and more than 20 missions later, Smiles on Wings is still running strong. Smiles on Wings not only provides dental care. The non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization has several on-going humanitarian projects established in rural communities in Thailand. These programs bring education, food, infrastructure and empowerment to villages and schools that need it most.

Transformed Smiles On our most recent mission in January 2011, Dr. Atul Patel and assistant Lori Hellmer were able to transform three teenagers’ smiles at the King’s Foundation R35 School in Takua Pa, Thailand. These youth had severe decay on their front teeth that drastically needed restorative care. Dr. Patel and Lori were able to construct fillings to repair their teeth. The fillings not only transformed these students’ smiles, but also greatly improved their confidence. Click to see pictures of their beautiful smiles.
