Smiles on Wings was founded in October of 2003 by Dr. Usa Bunnag, a native Thai dentist, living in the US. The organization was granted a non-profit status in the State of Maryland in March 2004. It is classified as a 501 (c ),(3) tax exempt organization by the IRS. Our missions are routinely conducted twice a year in remote villages in Northern Thailand. We were also involved in directly helping the Tsunami victims of Thailand. Our regular visits consist of providing dental and medical care, dental education and donating money for each school to care for the children, purchasing and transporting requested materials to the villages, such as educational materials, mosquito nets, blankets, shoes for the children, clothing, towels, personal hygiene products, raincoats. We are currently working with the Karen and Hmong tribes. Currently, there are 800,000 tribal villagers living in Thailand. In the past, aside from swindling practices of agriculture that caused deforestation, majority of tribal people in high mountains were practicing opium growing. Now, with the help from the government and His Royal Highness the King of Thailand, the practice was eradicated. Unfortunately, following the eradication, the areas once isolated now open to outsiders. Some villagers had been forced to drift fown to lowlands in search of work. Many end up in poorly paid or illegal jobs and in human trafficking agencies. Some minority girls have inadvertently ended up in prostitution. As a result, HIV/AIDS is rampant in hill tribe communities. Smiles on Wings strives to be a recognized leader in delivering much needed medical and dental care to the underprivileged population in Thailand. We also strive to empower and help the youth of this underprivileged population to achieve their dreams of becoming healthcare providers through higher education, thus enabling long-term continuation of delivering of healthcare in the areas and promote self-reliance. |
